Our approach to synthetic fibres
We apply synthetic fibres in all types of products, from lightweight and soft base layers with great moisture management properties to hard-wearing outer shells for offshore sailors which need to be durable and strong.
UNDERSTANDING SYNTHETIC FIBRES
The most commonly used synthetic fibers in our products are polyester, polyamide, and polypropylene, representing over 80% of our raw materials in 2020. Synthetic fibers have the general benefit of being strong and flexible; they can be shaped into many different types of yarns and constructions and dyed in various colors.
THE IMPACT OF SYNTHETIC FIBRES
Synthetic fibers are the most common fibers in the outdoor industry. These fibers are often produced using petroleum, which from an environmental perspective, is not ideal. Today, bio-based synthetic fibers are limited and the environmental benefits of these still remain to be proven. Synthetic fibres can also be made from recycled raw materials, which has a clear environmental benefit compared to virgin input material. Synthetic fibres can readily be recycled into new raw materials. One negative aspect is that they do not naturally degrade in the environment, and if they are leaked into nature, they can stay there for years.
